Oving is a small village in Sussex, in the south-west of the county on the coastal plain immediately to the east of Chichester. The A27 trunk road runs to the north and west of the village, with the A259 Chichester to Bognor road runs to the south.
The parish church is St Andrew's, which dates from the 13th century.
The village pub is a popular country pub, the Gribble Inn, and has a real ale brewery attached.
The civil parish had a recorded population of 1,051 at the 20111 UK Census. Half of this the population lives in Oving itself: the rest in the smaller settlements of Shopwhyke, Drayton, Merston and Colworth.
The landscape is flat and is given over mainly to agriculture with some growing of salad crops close to the A259. The landscape of the western part of the parish at Drayton and Shopwhyke has been affected by gravel extraction, which has left a number of lakes that are inaccessible to the public.
History
Oving is not listed in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Kelly's Directory of 1867 describes the ecclesiastical parish as extending to 2,946 acres with a population of 949.[1]
