Hornaday Rock lies in Bird Sound between South Georgia and Bird Island, off Cape Alexandra, South Georgia's north-west point.

The rock was named following the South Georgia Survey after William Temple Hornaday (1854-1937), American zoologist; Director of New York Zoological Park, 1896-1926, who from 1907 led the movement to introduce protective legislation for fur seals.
