Hardendale is a hamlet in Westmorland, a mile west of Shap, from which it is separated by the M6 motorway: the motorway's Junction 39 is a mile south of Hardendale, and the village's only road runs to that junction and across it. A mile to the south-east is a similar hamlet, Oddendale, to which Hardendale is connected only by footpaths: to drive between the two requires a seven-and-a-half mile round trip by way of Shap, or the use of unmade tracks.
