Fwthog is a hamlet forming a detached part of Herefordshire, locally situate in Monmouthshire. It forms part of the ancient parish of Cwmyoy, which also contains the Herefordshire hamlet of Bwlch Trewyn as well as Upper Cwmyoy and Lower Cwmyoy which belong to Monmouthshire proper.

The western boundary is formed by the Grwyne Fawr and the eastern by the Bwlch Isaf ridge and the succeeding watersheds in a southerly direction as far as the boundary with the parish of Llanvihangel Crucorney. It encompasses an area of just over 2,100 acres.
