East Rainton is a village found in the outskirts of the City of Durham, in County Durham. It stands alongside the A690 road on high ground between Sunderland and Durham, to the south of Houghton-le-Spring.
The name 'Rainton' is thought to come from the Old English Renningatun; 'Renn's people's village'.
The village once had four public houses; 'The Rose and Crown', 'The Blacksmiths Arms', 'The Village Tavern' and 'Traveller's Rest' (later named The Olde Ships Inn', which was the last of the four left standing. The name 'The Traveller's Rest' came the village's being a staging post on the Durham to Sunderland coaching road. In 2016, the last pub was bought and turned into an Italian restaurant.
The village post office closed in 2011 and its space was used to expand the local shop.
There is a local school - East Rainton Primary School.
