Betws yn Rhos is a village and parish in Denbighshire, about five miles inland between the coastal towns of Abergele and Colwyn Bay. It forms part of the Isdulas Hundred of the county. At the 2001 census the population was 944,[1] increasing to 1,052 at the 2011 census.[2]
Etymology
The first part of the name of the village comes from the Middle English word bedhus, meaning "prayer house", which became betws in Welsh.[3]
Notable residents
- Tom Duffy, part-time boxer, who was born in the village.
- T. Gwynn Jones (1871-1949), bard, scholar and journalist, who was born at 'Y Gwyndy Uchaf'.
- Roger Pinney, BBC journalist.[4]
