Birch is a village in Essex, five miles south-west of Colchester and 17 miles north-east of the county town, Chelmsford. The wider civil parish incorporates the hamlet of Heckfordbridge. According to the 2011 census, Birch had a population of 873 at the 2011 Census.

It is only two and a half miles away if the Abberton Reservoir.

The parish church, St Peter and St Paul, is a Grade II listed building, but has been derelict since it closed in the late 20th century. It is threatened with demolition as the Church of England cannot afford to repair it.
