First Rock lies close by Bröde Island, rising to 75 feet above sea-level, two and a half miles south of Cape Disappointment at the southern end of South Georgia.

The rock was charted by Cook in 1775 as one of the 'Green Islands' or 'Green Islets'. This particular rock was named by Discovery Investigations in 1926-30 from its position as the ' First Rock' of the group.
