Sweeney Mountains
The Sweeney Mountains rise to 5,594 feet above sea level to the north of Cape Zumberge on the Orville Coast of Palmer Land in the British Antarctic Territory.
These are mountains of moderate height for Palmer Land. They are about forty miles in extent, thirty miles north of the Hauberg Mountains. They include, from west to east:
- The Morgan Nunataks
- Mount Smart
- Mount Ballard
- Mount Edward (5,364 feet)
- Mount Jenkins
- Potter Peak
- The Anderson Nunataks and
- Hagerty Peak
The range was seen from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition under Finn Ronne on 21 November 1947, and named 'Catherine Sweeney Mountains' or 'Sweeney Mountains' after Mrs Edward C. Sweeney of Washington, DC, a contributor to the expedition. The mountains were surveyed from the ground on US Antarctic Peninsula Traverse of 1961-62, and photographed from the air by United States Navy in 1965-67.
