Llanelwedd is a village in Radnorshire across the River Wye from Builth Wells in Brecknockshire.
Location and geography
Llanelwedd is located by the River Wye immediately to the north of Builth Wells. By road, it is the junction of the A470 (from Rhayader), the A483 (from Llandrindod Wells and Welshpool), and the A481 (from Worcester). As the larger town, Builth Wells dominates in the general perception of the area, and Llanelwedd can be perceived as part of the town rather than a separate village.
A now dismantled railway line ran through the village generally following the Wye valley.
The local stone is suitable for various uses, and the Llanelwedd Quarries dominate the landscape on the north-east side of the village.
Features of the village
Llanelwedd is site of the Royal Welsh Showground, which hosts a number of attractions during the year as well as the show. It hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1993.
The village church is at the east end of the village, near the junction of the A481 and A483.
Llanelwedd has one Primary School - Llanelwedd C in W School. This has 3 mixed age classes - Dosbarth Coch has nursery and reception, Dosbarth Gwyrdd has years 1 and 2, whilst Dosbarth Glas has years 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Apart from the showground, the most visible feature to the passing motorist are the two petrol stations situated on opposite sides of the road. In 2009, these are both Esso brand, and the one nearest the Llanelwedd Arms has a Co-operative supermarket on the site.
