Barracouta Rock lies in the west end of Bird Sound, which separates Bird Island from mainland South Georgia.

The rock was charted from HMS Owen in 1961, and named after one of the ship's four survey motor boats, commemorating the vessels under the command of Captain W. F. Owen, during his African surveys, amongst which wer the Fantome Rock and the Heron, each of which also has a feature named after it.
