Fantome Rock
Fantome Rock lies in Bird Sound, the narrow sea passage between Bird Island and mainland South Georgia.
The rock was named after a motor cutter belonging to HMS Owen, used in the survey of the area in 1961 and which was lost in heavy seas near this rock. This boat was one of the ship's four survey motor boats, commemorating the vessels under the command of Captain W. F. Owen during his African surveys, along with the Barracouta and the Heron, each of which also has a feature named for them.
