Diego Garcia Diego Garcia is the main island of the Chagos Islands, which constitute the British Indian Ocean Territory. Diego Garcia is a tropical, footprint-shaped coral atoll south of the equator in the central Indian Ocean. The island lies at the southernmost tip of the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge a vast submarine range in the Indian Ocean topped by a long chain of coral reefs, atolls, and islands. Once an island of coconut plantations, Diego Garcia is now a naval and air force base, on lease to the United States. (Read more)
