Braemar

Braemar is a village in Aberdeenshire, high in the mountains some 58 miles west of Aberdeen. It is the closest sizable village to the upper course of the River Dee, sitting at an altitude of 1,110 feet.

The village is built around the great castle of Kindrochit at its heart which once commanded the glens leading in and out of the area but which now lies in ruins. It is now a centre for bracing holidays and mountain leisure activities, and at the heart of "Royal Deeside".

The Braemar Gathering, held by the Braemar Royal Highland Society, takes place on the first Saturday in September and is traditionally attended by the Royal Family whose Highland home at Balmoral is nearby. (Read more)
