Birmingham

Birmingham is a major city in Warwickshire, whose urban area spreads into Worcestershire and Staffordshire. Birmingham is the most populous British city outside London, with an urban area population of over a million. Beyond this, Birmingham, lies at the heart of a wider conurbation of over 2 miilion souls incorporating Solihull and the Black Country towns.

Birmingham was a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution, filled with factories, which led to its being dubbed "the workshop of the world" (or "the toyshop of the world") and "the city of a thousand trades". Though heavy industry has moved to the periphery, Birmingham is major business centre. It has the largest city economy after London and claims the title of the "Second City". (Read more)
