Koechlin Island lies off north-east coast of Adelaide Island, in entrance of Buchanan Passage
The island was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition of 1947-48, and by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition of 1956-57. It was surveyed from the ground by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from Detaille Island in 1958.
The island was named in association with the names of glaciologists grouped in this area, after René Koechlin (1866-1951), a Swiss civil engineer, glaciologist and author of Les glaciers et leur méchanisme (1944).
