Information

Wallington Town Hall is a municipal building in Woodcote Road, Wallington, in Surrey, built in 1934 for Wallington's council (which has long since been abolished).

The town hall is no longer used for local government but remains a Grade II listed building.[1]

History

Wallington's Parish Council sat at 37 Manor Road, , which was inherited by its successor, 'Wallington Urban District Council'.[2] The old vestry offices though proved inadequate, and in the late 1920s the council determined to build a new town hall, choosing the site of a house named "Sunny Bank" on Woodcote Road in Wallington: this was bought in 1929.

The new building, which was designed by Robert Atkinson in the Georgian style, was opened on 21 September 1934. It went on to become the headquarters of the 'Municipal Borough of Beddington and Wallington' from 1936.

In 1965 Wallington Town Hall ceased to be the seat of local government, when Wallington's council was abolished and a new, giant 'Sutton' council created. After being used as the local registrar's office, the town hall served as a courthouse from 1980 until 1999. It was then converted for educational use and became part of Sutton College in October 2005.[3]
