Information

Eldemire House stands in the neighbourhood known as Creek on Cayman Brac, the third of the Cayman Islands. It is a rare survivors: in 1932, a hurricane devastated the Brac, leaving just eleven houses standing, of which this is one. The storn battered the house and pushed off its foundation, but it remained intact, protecting the thirty-four people who were sheltered there.

The Eldemire family donated the house to the National Trust for the Cayman Islands by in 2005, since when the Trust has restored it to a former glory. The extensive restoration efforts included both cosmetic and structural work.

Nevertheless, in 2012 another powerful hurrincane struck the islands, Hurricane Paloma, and the house was badly damaged, which stalled the restoration project until late 2012.

The house today

The house today contains displays showing the effects of the 1932 hurricane which devastated the island, and about the island’s early industries such as shipbuilding, turtling, shark fishing and egging.[1]
