Information |
St. John the Evangelist is the parish church of Pembroke in Bermuda.
The church stands in a picturesque settings, and surrounded by beautiful old Bermuda cedars, poinciana and jacaranda trees. The churchyard of St John's, known as Pembroke Churchyard or Pembroke Cemetery, surrounds the church on both sides.
The parish church was established in the 1620s, when it was known as 'Spanish Point Church', after the original name for Pembroke Parish. The original church was a wooden structure with a thatched roof woven of palmetto leaves. That first church was destroyed by fire after a hurricane.
A new church was built in 1721. It was rebuilt in 1821 to accommodate a larger congregation.[1]
