Corfe Castle

Corfe Castle stands as a noble ruin above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates back to the 11th century and commands the Corfe Gap in the Purbeck Hills. Standing on a hill top, Corfe is one of the classic images of a mediæval castle.

The castle was in its first phase was one of the earliest castles to be built using stone when the majority were built with earth and timber. Today it is owned by the National Trust. (Read more)
