Great Siege TunnelsThe Great Siege Tunnels in Gibraltar are a series of tunnels dug inside the northern end of the Rock of Gibraltar. They were carved out from the solid limestone by the Soldier Artificer Company during the Great Siege of Gibraltar at the end of the 18th century, in order to place a battery at a strategic location in the north face of the Rock, and incidentally providing additional gun emplacements along the length of the tunnels The work was carried out by hand, mainly using sledgehammers and crowbars, aided by gunpowder blasts and by the end of 1783 approximately 908 feet of had been completed. Work in the following, peacetime years took this to 4,000 feet. Today the tunnels are a popular tourist attarction. (Read more) |
