Rothbury, Northumberland

Rothbury Rothbury is a pretty town in the hills of Northumberland, on the banks of the River Coquet thirteen miles northwest of Morpeth. Rothbury throve in the Middle Ages and into the Modern Period as a relatively important town in Coquetdale because of its position at a crossroads over a ford on the river, with roads to the county's largest towns - Newcastle upon Tyne, Alnwick, Hexham and Morpeth. It was chartered as a market town in 1291, and became a centre for cattle deal and wool. Today, Rothbury is a staging point for recreational walking. Landmarks in and around Rothbury include the Victorian-era mansion Cragside and the Simonside Hills. (Read more)
