Southend-on-Sea

Southend-on-Sea is a town and seaside resort in Essex, on the sea where the Thames Estuary is broadening to become the North Sea.

This was once no more than the south end of the village of Prittlewell, but when holidaymakers first came here in the Georgian period, the hamlet grew into a large and popular holiday resort, which has long since surpassed and subsumed its mother village, Prittlewell.

Now a major town in its own right, Southend has grown beyond reliance on tourism. (Read more)
