Napoleon's Grave in the Valley of the Tomb, St Helena

Valley of the Tomb The Valley of the Tomb runs out beneath Longwood on the island of St Helena. It is so named because Napoleon Bonaparte, in exile on St Helena, was buried here after his death on 5 May 1821. In accordance with his last wishes, Napoleon was interred on 9 May 1821 near a spring, in what was then known as the Valley of the Geranium, laid beneath a plain slab. Nineteen years later the Emperor's body was removed and reinterred in Paris, but the tomb remains. The valley is owned by the French government. (Read more)
