Poncet Point
Poncet Point is a low-lying, hummocky point on the north coast of Montagu Island in the South Sandwich Islands, between Borly Point and Leeson Point. It is a very recent feature, having been created by a volcanic eruption between 2005 and 2007.
Formation and exploration
This area of land formed from the overlapping lobes of a lava-fed delta between 2005 and 2007 during a long-lived (2001-2007) eruption of Mount Belinda.
On 26 January 2006, Leiv Sigismond Poncet (b. 1981) landed on the newly-formed volcanic headland. This is the first and so far only known landing at this point. Mr Poncet has made numerous yachting trips to South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The headland is named in his honour.
