The churches of St Caimin and St Brigid on Holy Island, County Clare

Holy Island, County Clare

Holy Island or Inishcaltra is an island off the western shore of Lough Derg belonging to County Clare. Now uninhabited, it was once a monastic settlement.

The island has an Irish round tower, and the ruins of several small churches, as well as part of four high crosses and a holy well. The cemetery on this island is still in use, coffins and mourners brought the short distance from the mainland in small boats. Less permanent visits can be made from Mountshannon harbour. (Read more)
