Lower Street, Curry Mallet, Somerset

Curry Mallet

Curry Mallet is a small village in Somerset, on the Fivehead River (also known as the River Ile), seven miles east of Taunton and above the ridge of the hills which drop down to Sedgemoor. The village had a population of just 302 in 2001.

The old spelling of 'Cory Mallet' is used especially in genealogies of the Poyntz family, "lords of Cory Mallett", who inherited the manor by marriage c.1217 to Helewise Malet. The name 'Curry' appears to be from the Old Welsh for 'boundary'. Curry Rivel is five miles to the north-east. (Read more)
