Coatbridge

Coatbridge is a town in Lanarkshire, about ten miles east of Glasgow city centre, set amongst the central Lowlands. The town forms part of a conurbation with neighbouring Airdrie.

The foundations of the town can be traced back to the 12th century when a Royal Charter was granted to the Monks of Newbattle Abbey by Malcolm IV, but these 'Monklands' were no more than a scatter of hamlet until the Industrial Revolution gathered them into a town; Coatbridge, which became a major centre for iron works and coal mining, until the early twentieth century.
