Ayios Nikolaos Station, Akrotiri and Dhekelia

Ayios Nikolaos

Ayios Nikolaos is a garrison village within the Eastern Sovereign Base Area, part of the overseas territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia on the island of Cyprus. The village is inland; a bubble of British territory surrounded by that of the Republic of Cyprus and connected to the main area of the Dhekelia Garrison only by a road, which road also belongs to the Sovereign Base Area. The main road from Larnaca to Famagusta runs through the village.

The village site stands at the very edge of the "Green Line", the United Nations buffer zone between Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus and the rest of the island, and a crossing point stands here, controlled on the British side by Sovereign Base Areas Police. The Turkish invasion of Cyprus halted here so as not to invade British territory.

The main activity of the village is the army base: Ayios Nikolaos Station. (Read more)
