Pool is a village in western Cornwall. It is bypassed by the A30 trunk road between Camborne and Redruth, and closer by it is between Tuckingmill and Illogan Highway.
Facilities
Some of the notable shops in the village are a Tesco Extra, on the site of Heathcoat's textile factory; a Morrisons on the site of the Flamingo Ballroom;[1] and a B&Q DIY store, on the site of Holman's Climax factory. Local businesses include Pool Market, a weekend market stall operation;[2] and Macsalvors which specialises in factory clearance and sells goods ranging from chandlery, building tools and material, new and used office furniture, etc.[3]
Pool is part of the ecclesiastical parish of Illogan,[4]
Trevenson Church is the village's Church of England church.[5]
Other facilities include Pool Health Centre and Carn Brea Leisure Centre (the first leisure centre in Cornwall to be run as a charitable trust);[6]
'Heartlands' is a 19-acre visitor attraction at Pool.
The Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site includes a site by the village: an area based around the South Crofty Mine's Robinson's Shaft;[7] East Pool mine is another industrial heritage centre, consisting of one of the largest surviving Cornish beam engines at Taylor's Shaft, and a restored winding engine at Michell's Shaft.[8]
Industry
Major employers are Pool Industrial Estate,[9] and the Pool Innovation Centre which opened in 2010 as part of regeneration work to stimulate economic growth and development in the heartlands of Cornwall.[10]
South Crofty Mine is owned by Western United Mines; they are dedicated to bringing full scale mining back to Cornwall through the introduction of modern mining methods.[11]
