J W Evans Silver Factory
The J. W. Evans Silver Factory stands at 54-57 Albion Street, in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham, Warwickshire.
Once the Jewellery Quarter was teaming with workshops, which gave the quarter its name. Though the trade is still well represented in the Jewellery Quarter, most of the factories have gone, and J W Evans, now in the hands of English Heritage, is a museum to the high days of the Quarter.
The factory stands behind the frontage of four terraced houses. The workshops retain their original drop stamps and fly presses. They are packed with thousands of dies for the manufacture of silverware, as well as the whole of the working equipment, stock and records of the business.
History
J W Evans was established in 1881, and today it is a museum to the industrial heritage of the city: this is one of the most complete surviving historic factories in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter.
English Heritage acquired J. W. Evans Silver Factory in 2008, and opened it to the public after a programme of repairs.
