The Garrison

The Garrison is a round peninsula jutting out from the west side of St Mary's, the largest island of the Isles of Scilly. It is almost an island in itself, joined to the main pat of St Mary's by a sandy isthmus on which the islands' capital, Hugh Town, is built.

The peninsula was formerly known as "The Hugh". It took its modern name after the intensive fortifications carried out in the eighteenth century.

The Garrison is indeed well named: this was for several centuries a fortified place: in its heart stands Star Castle, there are separate gun batteries, and ringing the Garrison the Garrison Walls built from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The remaining stretches of wall are in the care of English Heritage.
