Derwentcote Steel Furnace
Derwentcote Steel Furnace stands on the south bank of the River Derwent in County Durham, to the southwest of Rowlands Gill. Though in a countryside location, it stands as a monument to the industrial growth of this part of County Durham and neighbouring Northumberland: Newcastle upon Tyne, the mighty city of the latter county is a few miles to the north-east.
The furnace was built in 1720 and is an example of an early cementation furnace, which produced high grade steel.
The Derwentcote Steel Furnace was restored in 1990 by English Heritage, in whose care it remains.
