Chollerford is a village in Northumberland four miles to the north of Hexham, off the A6079 road. The old 'Military Road' (now the B6318) passes though.

Hadrian's Wall is close by and the River North Tyne flows by the village, crossed by the Chollerford Bridge. Beside the river is The George Hotel.

History

A short distance from the village, the Battle of Heavenfield was fought in 633 or 634 between a Northumbrian army under Oswald of Northumbria and an army under Cadwallon ap Cadfan of Gwynedd. This battle is commemorated by a stone cross at the side of the B6318 road (55°1’14"N, 2°6’0"W).

Transport

Chollerford was formerly served by Humshaugh railway station (renamed from Chollerford in 1919) on the Border Counties Railway which linked the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, near Hexham, with the Border Union Railway at Riccarton Junction. The first section of the route was opened between Hexham and Chollerford in 1858, the remainder opening in 1862.

The line was closed to passengers by British Railways in 1956. The station still stands and is now in use as a private house.
