Abernyte is a small village and parish in eastern Perthshire. The name of this place is of Gaelic origin, referring to the situation of the principal village of the parish, near the confluence of two rivulets, one of which is supposed to have obtained the appellation of Nyte. In 2001 the population was 106.

The village lies roughly seven miles west of Dundee.[1] It has a heritage organisation, the Abernyte Heritage Group, which was formed in 1988. The group was formed by a mixture of longstanding residents and more recent arrivals to Abernyte and was part of a drive to maintain and celebrate the village's distinct local identity.[2] The group undertook an oral history project in 1996 which is now held at the archives at the University of Dundee.[2]

The history of Abernyte in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is documented in Abernyte: The Quiet Revolution which was written by Dr Mary Young and the Abernyte Heritage Group and published in 2008.[3][4][5]

The Scottish Antique and Arts Centre lies around a quarter of a mile south of the village.

The village has a small school with 15 pupils[6] and church.[7]
