Tingwall is an example of a 'Þingvellir place-name', one of several variants on a name found amongst a number of towns and villages in areas of the British Isles which were at one point dominated by Norse or Danish settlers. The name Þingvellir is Old Norse (and Modern Icelandic) for "Assembly-plains".
