Bilston is a small village in Midlothian, just south of Loanhead on the A701. It is next to Bilston Glen industrial estate.
Bilston Burn is a tributary of the River North Esk. It flows east from the village, and is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
About the village
The North Esk carves a pretty valley by the village, now named Bilston Glen. The woodland in the valley has been designated a ‘site of special scientific interest’.
A bypass has been proposed to take the A701 east of the village, but one of the proposed routes was through the protected glen, and over soft ground and mineworkings prone to subsidence. Protesters objecting to the scheme continue to occupy the SSSI woodlands and no construction work has begun. The occupiers are there ostensively to preserve the wild wood, but they have built tree houses all over the wood and significantly altered the woodland.
