Pontycymer is a former mining village in Glamorgan, sitting in the Garw Valley. The name, sometimes spelled "Pontycymmer", is Welsh, meaning "Bridge of the confluence", referring to the joining of the two rivers here.
At one side of the village, marking its boundary with Pantygog, the River Garw is joined by the Nant Forch Wen. At the other side, towards its boundary with Blaengarw, the River Garw is joined by the Nant Gelli Wern (marsh grove stream) at Ffaldau, the village square.
Numerous locations in Pontycymer feature as the fictional village of Ogw in the film Very Annie Mary. The oldest street in the village is Railway Terrace, originally named "Milk Row".
Railway
The railway closed here long since and much of th track was lifted. However a rail preservation society has for some years been working to reopen the line to Brynmemyn as a heritage railway, the Garw Valley Railway.
