Out Stack
Out Stack an islet of Shetland is the northernmost point of the British Isles, lying immediately to the north of Muckle Flugga and 1.8 miles north of the island of Unst. It is one of the North Isles of the Shetland Islands and lies within the Hermaness National Nature Reserve.
Out Stack is little more than a rocky outcrop, and is uninhabited. It has been described as "the full stop at the end of Britain." Travellers heading north would not encounter any further land mass between Out Stack and the North Pole.
Lady Jane Franklin, the wife of ill-fated Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin, landed on the Out Stack in the 1850s, as it was the closest she could get to her missing husband.
On Saturday 8 August 2009 on landing Out Stack, Andy Strangeway became the first person to land the four extreme points of Scotland:[1]
- West – Soay, St Kilda – 28 August 2007
- South – Mull of Galloway – 31 March 2009
- East – Bound Skerry, Shetland – 2 August 2009
- North – Out Stack, Shetland – 8 August 2009
He remains the only person to have achieved this feat.
