It is a very welcome work in progress. What we really need is 2011 figures, based on Census population figures, by aggregating postcode areas to match as closely as possible the counties. RB 18:16, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
I have now acquired the 2011 info for England and Wales split into local authorities, and am now sieving through it. Whilst my knowledge of the proper counties is decent, my knowledge of local authorities and the differences between the counties boundaries and the administrative boundaries (as I like to call them!) is not that great!
This is much needed though, if the traditional counties are to be used then information like this needs to be easily accessed. This may take me some time but I should be able to do a few counties every 3-7 days depending on how much time I have and the county in question.
I will also use this Talk page to write down how I have reached these figures. This is important for say the 2001 or 2021 censuses, and should also be useful to build up information regarding the small differences in county boundaries (traditional v administrative). It can also mean people can check my adding up! Even with a calculator you can make mistakes! So yes anything under the line below I would appreciate it if it were not altered at all by anyone!! Thanks Yaxley 00:43, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Tintwistle is the area of Cheshire that 'sticks out' between the cities of Manchester and Sheffield. It's southern border is the A628 and the line of reservoirs next to it. It is all in the Peak District national park and thus sparsely populated. The traditional boundary of Yorkshire and Cheshire is exactly the same as the ward boundary, but the ward is part of, and governed by, the High Peak District of Derbyshire AA

Many of the wards of Sheffield borough in South Yorkshire AA are in Derbyshire. The boundaries of these wards may have been slightly changed but they are 90% the same as the Derbyshire/Yorkshire boundary. Essentially it is the urban wards of southern Sheffield that make an upwards looking spike into the city of Sheffield (like ^) but it doesn't reach the centre of the city. Also in Derbyshire is the more rural ward of Dore in the west.

Then the boundary carries on down the aptly named Boundary Road going northwards, before finally cutting through Redhill Park and into the countryside. Bournemouth UA is split into 18 wards, of which three are solely in Dorset, and one is partially. 70% of the 'Wallisdown and Winston West' ward is in Dorset.

#11 Durham

The following three districts are governed by Tyne & Wear AA

  • Gateshead: 200,214
  • South Tyneside: 148,127
  • Sunderland: 275,506

Durham is both the name of a 'ceremonial county', that does not use the same boundaries as the traditional county, and also a 'unitary authority'. There are four 'unitary authorities' within Durham and yes, some idiot has decided to name one of them Durham as well. Durham the unitary authority is split up into over 150 parishes, and some of them are actually south of the River Tees and thus in Yorkshire. See here. These are essentially in the rural west of the county, around the town of Barnard Castle. The following are the parishes in Yorkshire, with their 2001 populations. Data for 2011 level has not been released yet. Due to the small size of some of these parishes the data has sometimes been lumped together as the ONS cannot release data that might infringe personal information. If the parish is not listed here than it is north of the Tees and thus in Durham.

The borough of Stockton-On-Tees is (uniquely) split between the AA of both Durham AND North Yorkshire. There is a loose split between wards north of the River Tees and south of the River Tees. However it seems that when statistics are done, the borough contributes to both AAs. I really don't know how that works. Anyway there are 6 wards in Yorkshire, and 20 wards in Durham. I will just label the ones in Yorkshire for ease.
