Data

Monroe Island is the largest of the Larsen Islands off the west end of Coronation Island, in the South Orkney Islands in the British Antarctic Territory.

The island was roughly charted by Powell and Palmer, 6 December 1821, and further charted by Sørlle in 1912. Following recharting by Discovery Investigations in 1933, it was named 'Larsen Island', the name of Larsen being also applied to the whole group. Following surveys by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from Signy in 1947-52, the island was renamed 'Monroe Island' after the sloop James Monroe (under Captain Nathaniel Palmer) from Newport, Rhode Island, which anchored in this vicinity in December 1821.
