Staverton Bridge is a mediæval road bridge over River Dart in the south of Devon. It is found outside the little village of Staverton, carrying a minor road over the Dart that runs down to the main road into Dartington. It is today a Grade I listed structure.[1]
This is one of the oldest bridges in Devon: it is believed to have been built in 1413, since indulgences for the rebuilding of the bridge here were issued in that year by Bishop Stafford.[2]
History and structure
The bridge is said to have been in a state of decay in seventeenth century, which could have required repair or even some rebuilding.
The bridge is 69 yards long, carrying on has seven obtusely pointed arches a carriageway of 10 feet wide. The piers have V-shaped cutwaters on both sides with refuges above. The refuge at the north-west end is rectangular and measures 5' by 8'. In the old Devon style, it has low parapets with chamfered granite coping.[1]
