St AndrewsSt Andrews is a royal burgh and university town on the east coast of Fife. The town is known worldwide as the "home of golf", for the Royal and Ancient Golf Club is here; founded in 1754, it exercises legislative authority over the game worldwide. There has been an important church in St Andrews since at least the 8th century, and the seat of a bishop and then from the 15th century an archbishop until the abolition of prelacy in 1690. The town grew by the cathedral. Though once the ecclesiastical capital of Scotland, the cathedral now lies in ruins. The University of St Andrews, the oldest university in the English-speaking world after Oxford and Cambridge. (Read more) |
