It was properly charted by Discovery Investigations in 1926, on which occasion the hill above the cape was called 'Sharp Peak'. Following a survey by the South Georgia Survey, the headland was named 'Chaplin Head' after Lieutenant Commander John Miller Chaplin of the Royal Navy (1888-1977), survey officer in Discovery 1925-1927, and who was in charge of a hydrographic survey party in South Georgia in 1928-1930.
