Dean is a an ancient parish in the Stodden Hundred of Bedfordshire, adjacent to the borders with Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire. It comprises the villages of Upper Dean and Lower Dean, which together with Shelton form the civil parish of Dean and Shelton.

Upper Dean

Main article: Upper Dean

The village is close to the settlements of Melchbourne and Swineshead. Upper Dean is the location of All Saints Church, which has been a Grade-I listed building since 1964. It dates mainly from the 15th century and "escaped" Victorian restoration.[1]

Eileen Wade Primary School, which opened in 1877 and moved to new premises in 1973,[2][3] has 70 pupils. It is federated with nearby Milton Ernest Primary School.[4]

Lower Dean

Lower Dean lies closer to the tri-point of Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire and Northamptonshire than Upper Dean, and is situated on the River Til. It has a former Methodist chapel.

Famous person

The scholar and Bible translator Francis Dillingham (died 1625) was born here, perhaps in the early 1570s.[5]
