Information |
Dr Roy's Ironshore is a small strip of beach on Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman Islands, overlooking George Town Harbour. It is preserved by the National Trust for the Cayman Islands to keep it from development, which has swept all down to the shore elsewhere along this coast. The preserved beach is only 0.17 acres in extent.
The beach is a remaining part of the distinctive 'ironshore' of the island, a limestone karst formation.
The beach lies across from the former homesite of the late Dr Roy Edison McTaggart, whose memory is celebrated in the Caymans, not least for ensuring that the islands remained a British colony instead of passing to Jamaica on the latter's independence. His house stood on South Church Street, Grand Cayman, opposite the ironshore. The house was demolished in 1991 to make way for a new commercial building, but there was a public outcry from the loss of his home and the heritage it symbolised, which led to the Department of Planning imposing a development stipulation that a small strip of ironshore that was part of Dr Roy’s estate had to be donated and transferred to the Trust.
The preserved area, now known as 'Dr Roy's Ironshore' is thus a compromise between modern development and heritage preservation.
The National Trust promotes the Ironshire as the perfect place for watching the sunset. Interpretive signage has been installed on site.
