Belle Isle is the largest of the countless islands in Upper Lough Erne in Fermanagh, lying the very north-west of the lough where the waters of the River Erne regather themselves to flow out, down to Enniskillen and thence the broader water of the Lower lough.
Upper Lough Erne is less a lake and more akin to a network of streams divided and redivided from the Rive Erne and its incoming tributaries, between them surrounding many little, low, green plots of land which find themselves thus isolated as islands. Of these, Belle Isle is the largest, surrounded by two arms of the river, to the east and the west. The island is itself almost divided in two, by a long inlet through its centre.
The island is farmland, and part of the Belle Isle Estate. Here stands Belle Isle Castle, now a country-house hotel and venue.
