St Machar's Cathedral

The High Kirk of Aberdeen, known more frequently as St Machar's Cathedral is a Church of Scotland church in Aberdeen, county town of Aberdeenshire. It is found to the north of the city centre, in the burgh of Old Aberdeen.

Replacing the original cathedral built by Machar in 580, the current kirk was built by King David I in 1131, in the grand, Norman style. Of the Dark Age cathedral all that survives is a lozenge-decorated base for a capital supporting one of the architraves in the Charter Room.
