Wellbrook Beetling Mill at Corkhill in Tyrone is a surviving "bettling mill", now in the care of National Trust. It is the last working water-powered linen beetling mill remaining, which makes it a unique experience.
"Beetling" is the beating of material with heavy mallets, for the linen industry, once Ulster's major industry. The mill is driven from the waters of the Ballinderry River, which rushes down the verdant valley here.
Apart from the mills, visitors may enjoy the scenic setting; the mill nestles in an idyllic wooded glen, and from here are walks through the romantic woods, in which handy picnic spots are to be found.
In the mill there are acivities to be tried; one may try scutching, hackling and weaving in hands-on demonstrations, all against the thundering cacophony of beetling engines.
