Block Lake lies in the valley to the west of Husvik, a whaling station on Stromness Bay on the north coast of South Georgia.
The lake, the overflow of which was damned, served as a reservoir for Husvik whaling station.
The lake is named after Dr William Charles Block (b. 1937), the British Antarctic Survey invertebrate zoologist, and Head Terrestrial Zoology and Microbiology section, 1976-1997.
